UX & UI Design Work

Recent UX and UI design performed for NBC Universal, Product Design team serving Broadcast local news TV Stations web sites and mobile apps across the US.

Professional History

I began my professional journey studying topography at the Technical Trade School in my native Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

In my late teens, I served in the Navy, in the Hydrographic Department as a mapmaker. From there I went on to study Cartography. After my graduation I was invited to participate in the Rondon Project, in the Amazon region. This was followed by other mapmaking projects in Argentina. I was also involved as a cartographic designer for the construction of dams in East Africa.

Years later, I moved to the United States where I continued my professional education and held a position as designer for a signage company in New York.
Aware that I needed to expand my knowledge of typography, I enrolled in the Parsons School of Design for Signage.

Through the 1980s I was involved as a designer with environmental design companies. Computer technology opened doors for me to explore new ways of working in graphic design.
In the early 1990s I formed my own company, Rio Station Graphics, producing annual reports, brochures, real estate maps and technical illustrations for trade magazines. Rio Station Graphics was sold and I became a freelance consultant. Ambitious, I wanted more for my career.

I was pleased to land a position at New York City Transit. My participation as mapmaker and Information Designer helped to develop new maps for public transport. Those maps are still in use today. I am proud of my contribution to the City of New York. After five years at the MTA, New York City Transit.

I accepted an Information Designer position at Newsweek Magazine. Occasionally I was called for consulting work for special projects by other news organizations as well, including Forbes, Black Enterprises Magazines. From Newsweek I was invited to redesign the news graphic section of the New York Daily News.

While I was leaning web programming, a new concept of broadband TV News on the Web, developed by a Company called The Feedroom, caught my attention. I joined the startup as Information Designer Producer. The design knowledge I had from printing design media was helpful expand my knowhow at the digital field.

Moving on with my careers visualizing the news on the web, I joined The Associated Press digital news division as their Art Director. At the AP I built a team of interactive storytelling designers. It is a daily challenge to choose the best interactive stories to present to hundreds of Associated Press members online newspapers.

My eager for new ideas and new challenges led me to Disney’s ABC News Digital. As a Creative Director I supported my creative team of news designers, photo editors and producers and front end developers. It was a fascinating experience working with TV News experience interface design.

My years at ABC News Network were followed by a position as a Senior UX/UI designer editor at Thomson Reuters. It was a thrilling responsibility to create news storytelling and data visualization serving journalists in four Continents.

As I was continuing my journey in the tech creative digital field I returned to Broadcast TV to translate the look and feel, user behavior and storytelling, this time at NBC Universal / Telemundo Stations.

At 30 Rock in NYC I found myself mentoring and leading designers and developers to help the team implementing user experience for apps, mobile web and desktop platforms. In addition to a UX Design Lead job I had the honor of being the NBC Digital Creative Director. At NBC, I soon moved into strategic data analysis on Social Media and internal business presentation graphics.
Since 2016 I have been moving more into consulting and teaching. I still have a hunger for the next data/visual challenge.

I continue pursuing teaching opportunities in information design and visual journalism for those who appreciate data visualization and interactive storytelling. For me, the process of learning and providing value to my clients, students and strategic partners continues.
